Ruth Graham & Friends Conference Hailed
For Its ‘Refreshing’ Transparency In Virginia Beach

London Bridge Baptist Church of Virginia Beach, VA rolled out the welcome mat for Ruth Graham & Friends in late September, for the group’s first fall 2006 conference.

The conference offered proof that however large the audience, Ruth Graham & Friends conferences have the feeling of an intimate gathering of good friends.

“Transparency is our hallmark,” Ruth said in her opening remarks on Friday night. Transparency means honesty, she added. Honesty on the part of the speakers in talking about their own personal stories; and the honest willingness on the part of conference attendees to take in the message that everyone, Christian or not, can stumble and fall in life – and that therein lies the path to forgiveness and renewed strength and compassion.

“We are not theologians or ministers, we are Christians committed to the scriptures,” said Ruth, referring to herself and all the conference speakers.

“We all live in grace, and do the best we can,” she added, quoting the words that her father, the Reverend Billy Graham, spoke to her at a time of deep personal distress for her.

Sharing Stories Connects Speakers To Participants

People were impressed with both the message – and the messengers. “The most important thing was that every instructor, every speaker, they were themselves involved with the same problems that they were talking about. The speakers and workshop leaders all showed compassion, that they truly cared about the individuals they spoke to,” said conference attendee Tiffany.

“I felt like the people were speaking from their hearts, with no masks – they were very transparent. Generally people will share the good things but you don’t share the kinds of things that the speakers were talking about very often,” added Connie, another participant.

Ruth’s testimony particularly impressed Karen, who said, “I had no idea of Ruth’s testimony. The Lord is really with her. And it’s very surprising to find out that she’s a real person, like everyone else out there.”

People drew hope and inspiration from the speakers’ candor. “It’s very comforting to hear that when they were in so much pain, their faith in Him brought them through it. When they sought Him, He saved them. He showed them His promises and they were obviously freed,” said Courtney.

Real Answers And Real Help For Real Life Problems

But these conferences are not just about inspiration. They are about helping people acquire practical advice and tools that they can use in their daily lives to deal with the stresses in their own lives – and to help others going through similar challenges. “The conference was very, very helpful on many levels,” said Charlotte, a participant.

“The speakers gave me a lot of insight into problems that I have, and information that I can use in my daily life,” echoed Terrance, another participant.

“Instead of pointing fingers, the speakers said to roll up your sleeves and help out,” commented Cindy.

By the end of the conference, many participants seemed ready for more.

“Make sure to say that I am going to invite all my friends to the next conference in our area,” said Kim.

“Tell Ruth to keep the message coming – that’s important,” said Brenda.

Tracy had a piece of practical advice for people who plan to attend upcoming conferences: “Warn the ladies to bring tissues!”
